Special Labeling for RESTRICTED Products

Look for special directions on RESTRICTED products or products classified as COMMERCIAL with a RESTRICTED use. If a product has been classified as RESTRICTED, then the labeling must have a section called NATURE OF RESTRICTION at the top of the secondary display panel, before the directions for use. This section tells you if there are special conditions for using, storing, displaying or distributing this pesticide.

Restricted Uses:

The following example shows how a restricted product may be labeled:

NATURE OF RESTRICTION: This product is to be used only in the manner authorized. Contact local pesticide regulatory authorities about use permits which may be required. This product is to be stored and displayed apart from food and feed.

Pesticide Product Label System (PPLS)

The Pesticide Product Label System is a collection of images, in multi-page TIFF format, of pesticide labels which have been approved by the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) under Section 3 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). There are differences, however, between labels in PPLS and those in the market place.

The collection contains:

  • The initially approved label for pesticide products registered under FIFRA Section 3.
  • Subsequent versions of labels which have changed via amendment or notification.

  • Associated correspondence about the terms of registration, specifying any
changes which the registrant was required to make in the final printed label.

Label images are indexed by EPA registration number and the date on which the label was initially registered or amended. Because some label amendments address only portions of the label, you may have to review several labels for a single product to determine the complete terms of registration.

Limitations of the Pesticide Product Label System:
  • Products which have been subsequently canceled or transferred are not identified in the collection

  • Image quality, collection completeness and other Limitations of the Pesticide Product Label System.
