Significance of Eco-Labeling

Eco labeling:

Eco-labeling is a term used to refer to products (and services), which are familiar the environment and the health of the consumer during their entire life cycle. Meanwhile, their quality remains very high.

Consumer products (and services) are marked with a logo, which serves as a clear and comprehensible indication for the customer that the marked product (service) was subjected to evaluation by an independent third party, which has already guaranteed the quality of 330 products. Currently, more foreign companies use the Eco-label on one or more products and this number is constantly growing.

The range of certified environmentally friendly products is very broad – from toilet paper to paint on hot water boilers and from detergents to environmentally friendly services provided in tourism or education.

Eco-labeling provides a product with:

• a state-guaranteed certification of a higher utility value on the basis of passing strict tests and thereby verifying compliance with qualitative and environmental requirements.
• an international recognition which proves that the product is more environmentally friendly than competitors’ unlabeled products.
• a recommendation to customers from a number of environmental NGOs.
• a product inclusion among the products prioritised by all institutions which use the system of green procurement.

Global Eco-labeling Network :

GEN - Global Eco-labeling Network is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1994. This global network for labeling environmentally friendly products includes individual national and international programmes from all over the world. Currently, it has 26 members and 4 associate organisations.

The impetus for its foundation was given by the effort to collect information about all existing eco-labeling programmes, individual procedures of selection and subsequent standardisation of relevant environmental criteria.

GMO Food Labeling

GM-Food Definition:

1. Foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
2. Foods that contain GM-genetic material/protein for example uncooked maize meal.
3. Foods obtained through genetic modification but not containing any genetic material/protein, for example glucose from processed maize. It would be almost impossible with currently available laboratory techniques to find any genetic material/protein in this category.

Products of animals that were fed on GM-feed are excluded. Studies have failed to detect foreign GM-genetic material/proteins in animal meat and milk.

The internationally labelling situation:

Since 1995 there has not been any consensus amongst Codex Alimentarius member countries. In the meantime individual countries have regulated this to different degrees. European countries label all categories of GM foods/feeds whereas the US labels only improve/changed characteristics. Whether Codex would ever reach consensus remains to be seen.

Non-GM food:

Agricultural practices inevitably result in co-mingling of commodity grain. Mingling could happen on the farm, the silo and along the food chain. An accredited identity preservation system (IPS) could be either for GM grains/food or for Non-GM grains/foods or both. The South African Bureau of Standards is presently developing an IPS for Non-GM grains/food. Such a system could be utilized to facilitate export to specific markets. Voluntary IP systems already exist.
