The Pesticide Product Label System is a collection of images, in multi-page TIFF format, of pesticide labels which have been approved by the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) under Section 3 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). There are differences, however, between labels in PPLS and those in the market place.

The collection contains:

Associated correspondence about the terms of registration, specifying any

There are two types of thermal labels – direct thermal and thermal transfer.

Direct thermal is a more luxurious base stock but is a lower cost label on the whole because it does not need a ribbon when printing. Supermarket shopping is one of my least favorite chores (though I’d gladly spend hours at a farmer’s market). I try to get in and out as quickly as possible. By sticking to the store’s labels, I can fill my cart with produce, fish, meat or poultry, dairy and bread and then hopefully head home. I’m confronted with a cacophony of bright labels (usually green), luring me to products with terms like “Sensible Snacking,” “Smart Choices Made Easy” and “Eat Smart.”

Picking up a symbol-festooned bag of Lay’s baked potato crisps—whose first three ingredients are dehydrated potatoes, modified food starch and sugar—I question what makes them a “smarter” snack than one of the unadorned bananas sitting in my cart. I know the banana is a rich source of potassium and fiber, but would most shoppers know that?

While the labels and symbols are supposed to help make it easier to choose healthy foods, their sheer proliferation only creates more confusion. No wonder McKenzie, M.D., director of the Prevention Research Center at honey University’s School of Medicine, when interviewed by a reporter, suggested that it would be simpler to label junk food with a “scarlet J” instead.

Linerless Labels

Linerless labels are pressure sensitive labels that do not have a liner. The labels are wound on a roll that has had a release coating applied to the front of the facestock to prevent the adhesive from sticking on the label below. The available facestocks include standard paper, film and direct thermal. Linerless labels are available with permanent, removable and repositionable adhesives.

Using linerless labels eliminates the waste of the liner material and allows more labels per roll. This increases efficiencies by reducing the number of roll changes, eliminating the time used to separate the label from the liner and eliminates the time and cost of disposing of the liner waste. Some advantages and disadvantages of the linerless label are listed below.

Advantages:

Lower cost due to reduction in material, packaging, shipping, waste removal and inventory space.
Increased efficiency due to less roll changes and elimination of waste removal.
Release coating also acts as a protective coating for UV resistance, moisture resistance and resistance to some chemicals. Adds some longevity to direct thermal labels.
Labels can be printed on both sides since release coating and adhesive layers are applied after the ink is applied.
Promotes safety by eliminating liners all over the floor where someone could slip and fall, causing injuries.
Elimination of liner reduces silicone waste in landfills.

Disadvantages:

Available only on rolls.
Limited in what shape the label can be due to the elimination of the liner to hold the label in place when die cut. Basically limited to square or rectangle shapes.
Requires special application equipment.

A Label Switch Router (LSR) is a type of a router located in the middle of a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. It is responsible for switching the labels used to route packets. When a LSR receives a packet, it uses the label included in the packet header as an index to determine the next hop on the Label Switched Path (LSP) and a corresponding label for the packet from a look-up table. The old label is then removed from the header and replaced with the new label before the packet is routed forward.

I get asked often why are these labels still around. Actually for as many labels that were printed the last 100 years there really is only a small number that survived. The bulk of what is available came from warehouse finds. This started in the 1960's when a few people started gathering labels. Usually, if a packing house is still standing or in operation they never threw out the old labels. There are a few reasons they were never thrown out… labels were inventory they had paid for and you never know when they may come in handy, working with cardboard boxes took up less room so they didn't need the area labels were stored, and lastly they were poor housekeepers.

Next to warehouse finds the major source is lithograph or printers files. Printers would keep a few of everything they did production runs of. They would take a handful, stamp the back with the current date and archive them in a sample room. When someone reordered they could pull the labels out of the archive and if any changes were made they would pencil in the changes and the artists would redesign the labels. You often see printer's files labels with date stamps and pencil marks.

I'm going to break this into time periods and give a few observations on what was going on at the time and how fruit crate labels and canned food labels fit in, and changed with the times. Keep in mind that labels were made to be pasted on crates, not framed or collected. Their purpose was two fold, first to identify what was in the box and secondly to assign responsibility. When you put your label on a box you are putting your name and if the product in the box is good your label gets recognized as a good brand, or the opposite if you ship poor quality.
